About

If you arrived at this page of my site you may wonder who is behind it: The domain name of my site lets on the fact that friends call me Willy, my real name however is Stefan Wilhelm.

Stefan Wilhelm, Berlin 2007

From the professional point of view, I studied and graduated in Microsystem Technology/Automation (Germany), and worked three Years in the R&D of a company, which produces high precision form- and coordinate measurement machines. There I implemented software for closed loop controllers (which means I made the machine moving how and where the people wanted; with a positioning accuracy better than a 2000th of a hair diameter). Usable service toolboxes and web based tools were part of my job as well. Currently I am PhD student in Edinburgh (Scotland), designing actuators that are about 1000 times smaller than a measurement machine.

In private, I like technical things, and can sit from time to time in front of source code till late night. Some real passions I’m missing over here are playing piano and beekeeping – well, it’s problematic in a town, as (1) bees have only a range of about 1 to 2 km, (2) my neighbours would “appreciate it”, and (3) I am a convinced bus rider – and there is no bus stop at neither the local acacias nor rape fields, clover or dandelion – it’s a shame.

Alright, if you are in Scotland and see me crossing the street – let’s go for a coffee or a pint …

About this homepage

As well as a lot of users and developers of open source software, I am in the opinion that things I wrote should be accessible and usable for everyone – this homepage is actually my channel for this. Maybe you have already noticed that I try to write the texts in this context in a quite personal way (I hope you don’t mind), and keep a simple design without advertising (The variable width design may be untypical today, but it is the best layout to show source code).
